Slow Summer Self-Care & Studio Return

Laura Leeder • July 30, 2025

In the heart of the Creston Valley, surrounded by the ever-changing rhythm of the seasons, I find daily inspiration for both my art and my well-being. I’m Laura Leeder — an artist, floral gardener, bird enthusiast, sunseeker, and proud mom to Gabby, my yorkie and loyal studio assistant. Through my nature-inspired mixed media paintings, I strive to create work that uplifts the spirit and brings beauty, warmth, and a touch of whimsy into people’s lives.

Return to the Studio - Embracing a Slower Summer

There’s a quiet beauty to the middle of summer — when the garden blooms boldly, the air is thick with birdsong, and time seems to stretch just a little longer. I’ve been leaning into that stillness, letting it guide me gently back into my creative space.

As a result of this time, new art ideas have been solidifying in my mind. Notably one for a new project that involves some of my favorite backyard visitors… birds, of course!

This summer has been especially joyful as I’ve witnessed more hummingbirds than ever before in our yard. We watched mothers bringing their young around, introducing them to their favourite blossoms. Instead of just passing through, they’ve chosen to linger — each guarding their territory, buzzing from flowerbed to flowerbed from early morning to evening. It’s been a delight to witness!

We’ve also had visits from baby blue jays and squirrels, learning the safe corners of our garden and where to find food. These small moments have filled my heart and, as always, planted seeds of inspiration for my work.

From Inspiration to Creation - A Peek Inside the Studio

As hinted at in my last blog, I’ve been quietly brainstorming new art ideas, and I’m finally back at the studio table. Here’s a little sneak peek at one of the designs I’ve been working on.

Will it become a finished piece as-is? Or will it serve as the beginning of something larger — perhaps even a future design for seasonal art products?

This little draft may seem simple, but it carries the essence of those ocean walks, blooming boardwalk planters, and the quiet moments that refilled my creative well.

10 Days to Slow Down & Embrace Summer

Here are a few of my favourite ways to press pause and enjoy this fleeting season more fully:

1. Sip your morning coffee outdoors (even if just for five minutes). I keep a small propane heater and a throw nearby for chilly mornings. It’s my absolute favourite way to start the day. ☕✨🍃

2. Walk without your phone — let birdsong be your playlist. 🎶🐦

3. Revisit an unfinished creative idea with no expectations.

4. Tend to something simple: a flowerbed, a sketchbook, or a stack of art books. 🎨

5. Write one sentence in your journal that starts with: “Today I noticed…”  🥰

6. Plan one small act of kindness (even if it’s for yourself). 😉❤️

7. Bake or make something you’ve been craving — and share a piece. For me, it’s always summer salads. One of my go-to dishes is a colourful bean salad I’ve made for years.   📝🥗Bermuda Bean Salad * There are several online variations that you can try. I do recommend you make it several hours ahead of serving it, so that the flavours have time to blend and develop. It's quick, easy and tasty!

8. Sit on a bench or in your garden and do nothing at all. I like to do this in the late afternoon with a glass of wine in hand. 🪶🍷🍃

9. Bring the garden indoors with a fresh bouquet of flowers — replace weekly or as needed. Whether from your own garden, a local grower, or a roadside stand, enjoy their beauty and linger over their delicate scent. It’s a gift to yourself. 💐🌞💝

10. Say no to one thing to make space for rest. This one’s a gamechanger! 🗝️✨

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

- F. Scott Fitzgerald

Soft Endings & New Beginnings

If you’re feeling the call to slow down this season too, you’re in good company. I’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes peeks at my creative process — and perhaps a few sneak previews of what’s to come. A new product design may be in bloom before summer ends!

💐Warmly, Laura

Most of the time we talk about chronic stress, but what if we switched to talk about chronic health. It is within all of our reach and does not mean trips to Mexico or luxurious spas. It really is about understanding the mind body connection and how we have much more control over how we think, feel and behave than we realize.

On the blog this month we are discussing the tools of manifesting and visualization. This is something that we have done for thousands of years. Athletes and many other professionals and entrepreneurs use these techniques to not only provide inspiration, but to gain clarity on their goals. As a therapist these techniques serve as a guide to empower clients to acknowledge and confront and overcome limiting beliefs by providing tools and encouragement needed to create a life filled with possibility and growth. These techniques are based in research and science.
