Emotional Coaching

Lynn Hiscoe • Jul 22, 2023

Holy cow there are a lot of coaches out there!!

There are mindset coaches, business coaches, social media coaches, financial coaches, fitness coaches, diet coaches……….there are all kinds, none of them the same.

Some coaches have the qualifications. Example; the financial coach with training in accounting, fitness coaches with certification in fitness coaching, or diet coaches with nutritional certification.

As a psychotherapist I do not always refer to myself as a coach yet coaching can definitely be a part of the work I do. So what is the difference? You can call yourself a coach with little or no formal training. Some coaches have taken coaching certification and they will often mention it. There is no prerequisite to being a coach in most programs unlike some counseling programs.

If you belong to a regulatory body in the counseling world, the most common in BC is the BC Association of Clinical Counselors. That means that the counselor has to have a minimum of a masters degree in an approved program, and hundreds of hours in supervision.

EG Therapeutic Coaching or Emotional Coaching is a blend of psychotherapeutic approaches commonly used in therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). So basically it is a coaching approach but with a formal background in training whereas therapeutic support can be offered when needed. I have two designations, one is as an RCC (Registered Clinical Counselor) and I also belong to the BC College of Social Worker. My masters is in Social Work.

Why does this matter?

  1. I adhere to a code of ethics.
  2. I have to have so many hours of training per year to keep my skills current.
  3. My practice is evidenced based which means that the therapeutic approach has been researched in its efficacy.
  4. I belong to two regulatory bodies that ensure the stand of practice is upheld.

On the blog this month we are discussing the tools of manifesting and visualization. This is something that we have done for thousands of years. Athletes and many other professionals and entrepreneurs use these techniques to not only provide inspiration, but to gain clarity on their goals. As a therapist these techniques serve as a guide to empower clients to acknowledge and confront and overcome limiting beliefs by providing tools and encouragement needed to create a life filled with possibility and growth. These techniques are based in research and science.
