My Journey

Lynn Hiscoe • Jun 30, 2023

Harnessing the horsepower of group wisdom—when we pull together, we can move mountains.

It’s the dirt roads that define my journey—not my credentials, nor my 25 years of experience in counselling and social work. It’s not the programs and publications I’ve developed, nor the books I’ve read or contributed to.

It’s the back roads, the rough terrain and winter storms that shaped my career. It’s the call to put my truck in four-wheel drive when there is no other choice but to keep going. It’s the call to persevere for myself or for someone in desperate need.

It’s the rocky roads from which my career path was carved, putting myself through school as a single mom, leaving an abusive relationship and pursuing my career in counselling and social work. And it’s on those roads where I found the key to making a difference in people’s lives –and in the community.

I’m Lynn Hiscoe and I’ve been driving trucks since I was 16 years old. My 1969 Ford truck is a symbol of my career as a Registered Clinical Counselor and Social Worker. It not only represents the hard road I’ve traveled personally, but that of the women and professionals I have walked alongside. It represents the capacity to carry a heavy load and the tenacity of small communities that pitch in together during hard times.

On these dirt roads I’ve been struck by one uniting reality as I’ve journeyed with hundreds of diverse women across rural and urban communities. We’re suffering the same stories in isolation. Shifts in our economy and culture are pulling us further apart. Increasingly, we’re trending toward working remotely, doing more with less and slashing budgets for cultivating personal and community connection – from the corporate Christmas party to the summer BBQ and the corporate or personal retreat.

And these may seem like first world problems. But a real mental health crisis looms in the backdrop as governments grapple with intractable social and economic challenges. Our workloads and demands of motherhood leave us little margin to connect with ourselves and others. Sometimes it feels like we’re spinning our wheels in the mud and getting nowhere. But the light in the storm is this: What we’ve needed, we’ve had all along. Each other.

Harnessing the horsepower of group wisdom—when we pull together, we can move mountains. Whether online or in person, my history of treating, counselling and coaching professionals and individuals has revealed no force more powerful than group wisdom to change lives.

The advantages of group settings for life coaching, therapy, and self improvement, have been well documented in the therapeutic industry and in my own experience as a credentialed counsellor. There is an energy unlike any other that arises when we gather to point ourselves in the direction of our dreams. Witnessing this transformative approach has driven me to cultivate a more intentional movement in this direction within my practice. This has often been at great personal and professional expense.

But I truly believe the investment is worth it—to help communities thrive, and to see women linking arms to empower each other and lift each other up in our hardest moments… That is a vision worth fighting for.

On the blog this month we are discussing the tools of manifesting and visualization. This is something that we have done for thousands of years. Athletes and many other professionals and entrepreneurs use these techniques to not only provide inspiration, but to gain clarity on their goals. As a therapist these techniques serve as a guide to empower clients to acknowledge and confront and overcome limiting beliefs by providing tools and encouragement needed to create a life filled with possibility and growth. These techniques are based in research and science.
